During our UOI investigation this week, we have identified pitch and tone, for tone we worked in small groups to say, ‘It’s a sunny day’ in an angry voice, a sad voice and an excited voice. The students loved showing how they could add tone to their voices, some even changed their pitch. We listened to sound effects made by instruments and found objects, then we made our own sound effects using our body to represent a thunderstorm. Ask you child to demonstrate how to make a rain sound. We described how we could made items sound louder or quieter and how we might categorise them. We also made a connection to vibrations and how larger vibrations make louder sounds. We concluded this section of our UOI with a post-assessment on sound.

For maths this week, the students described 3D shapes using the properties of a shape, ie 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices/corners. they identified real life objects and their 3D shape counterparts and matched the nets of 3D shapes with their solid. Students built shapes using straws and connectors, then uploaded a photo on Seesaw where they also identified some properties of their shape. They also coloured nets of shapes to see how 3D shape is made. We conclude this unit with our 3D shape post- assessment.

In literacy this week, we spelled unfamiliar words using letters patterns, then sorted those words in rhyming patterns. Our reading strategy this week was using retelling as our top comprehension strategy. Retelling helps readers recall what is happening in a story, develop a sense of story structure and become more accurate in monitoring their understanding. In our guided reading sessions, we have continued to focus on comprehension, especially inferential comprehension. Students have read their book, then identified the sequence of the story, why the author wrote it or what the character is like. We played some language games to support our use of spelling and finding rhyming words or we made sentences using provided parts of speech.

On Sunday, we were fortunate to participate in a fitness circuit fun by Grade 5 students. The students really enjoyed this experience!

Next week, as there will only be two school days we will begin to work on the listed objectives below :

UOI:

Begin to learn about light, we will be focusing on:

  • A light source is something that produces and gives out light.
  • Light sources can be natural or made by humans.
  • We need light to be able to see things.
  • Light travels out from a source of light in all directions.
  • Light travels in straight lines.

Literacy:

  • making words using letter patterns
  • guided reading sessions focusing accuracy, fluency and comprehension
  • writing using the scientific method
  • writing up an investigation using procedural writing

Maths:

  • symmetry and reflection

Upcoming events:

ABIS will be closed from Tuesday, 26 May, and school will resume on Sunday, 31 May.
