At ABIS, WIDA testing is given twice a year. For grade 2, the entire grade level is given the test as a benchmark of their English level. Then those needing support receive it from one of our EAL teachers. If your child receives EAL support, they would have taken the test recently.

You may be asking yourself, why do international schools Use WIDA?

International schools use the WIDA assessment to better support students who are learning English as an additional language. WIDA helps schools:

  • Identify students who may need English as an Additional Language (EAL) support
  • Monitor students’ language development and progress over time
  • Place students in the most appropriate language support programs
  • Provide instruction tailored to each student’s individual language needs

The goal of WIDA is to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed academically while continuing to build confidence in their English language skills.

How Can Parents Support Their Child?

Encourage Daily English Practice

Children develop language skills best through regular exposure and practice. Parents can support learning by:

  • Speaking English at home when possible
  • Encouraging reading in English, such as books, magazines, or online articles
  • Watching English-language television shows, cartoons, or educational programs
  • Listening to English audiobooks, songs, or podcasts together

Support All Four Language Skills

WIDA assesses four key language areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Families can help strengthen these skills in everyday ways.

  • Listening: Encourage your child to follow directions in English, listen to stories, or participate in conversations.
  • Speaking: Practice daily conversations, storytelling, and answering questions in complete sentences.
  • Reading: Provide books that match your child’s reading level and encourage reading aloud at home.
  • Writing: Encourage journaling, writing short stories, or summarizing books and experiences.

Use Online Learning Resources

Many child-friendly online tools can help students practice English skills in an engaging way, including:

  • Duolingo for vocabulary and grammar practice
  • Epic! for access to digital books
  • Raz-Kids for reading practice and comprehension
  • ESL Games Plus for fun language-learning activities

Practice Test-Taking Skills

Helping children become familiar with test formats and strategies can build confidence and reduce stress. Encourage your child to:

  • Listen carefully and take their time when answering questions
  • Speak in full sentences rather than one-word answers
  • Read a variety of texts and discuss their meaning
  • Practice writing short responses with a clear beginning, middle, and end

Encourage a Positive Mindset

It is important for children to understand that WIDA is not a high-pressure test, but a tool that helps teachers understand how to best support their learning. Encourage your child to do their best, celebrate progress, and remind them that language development takes time and practice.
