Weekly Photos Here!!!
Another week completed with and without me!! As you all know I was unable to attend school on Sunday and Monday due to a family emergency. However, Ms. Cora was there for my students to make sure they stayed focused and on top of it.
For our Unit of Inquiry we are focusing on light and sound. Last week we took a closer look at sound and this week the students focused on light. They learned how light travels through opaque, translucent, and transparent materials. They created no light dens in groups on Tuesday and as a whole class on Wednesday. Please take a look at the weekly pictures to see the process and end results. Next week we will end the unit with presentations of the students’ home projects. This will be the last presentation of the year and is important for the students to take all that they have learned and show me how they have grown during presentations throughout the year. If your child has not turned in their home project today, it is a must they do on Sunday.
For English this week we have been focusing on reading comprehension. Students are reading short stories and are being asked closed ended questions as well as open ended questions. It is important that students can answer “why” questions and give examples from the text to support their reasoning. They are also being asked to create new ideas and why they chose these ideas. Conceptual understanding is crucial because it moves students beyond rote memorization, allowing them to grasp the “why” and “how” behind facts. We will continue to focus on phonics throughout the remainder of the school year. This week’s spelling will be dragged into two weeks due to the upcoming Eid holiday.
In math we are focusing on symmetry and tessellations. Students have learned that symmetry means that one side of an object or shape is an exact, matching mirror image of the other. They have drawn symmetry halves of shapes and images throughout the school week. They have been introduced to tessellations. A tessellation is a pattern of repeating shapes that fit together perfectly like puzzle pieces, with no gaps and no overlaps. We will continue focusing on symmetry and tessellation next week.
