This week we have completed many assessments, we had our end-of-year benchmark assessment for maths, students have been individually assessed on their reading skills and understanding and the they have completed several WIDA assessment, which shows the progress made in their English language skills and understanding.

Earlier this week we were able to view the DP art exhibition in LC3 and Mr Andrasko, art teacher, spoke with us about the process of the students in creating their artworks.

In our UOI this week we have continued to explore sound and how it begins with vibrations, then travels by sound waves to reach our ears. We used our string telephones to investigate changes which can be made with sound; your child can easily make a string telephone at home and show you some of the investigations we made in school. We also investigated how far sound can travel within our learning spaces.

In maths this week we have been continuing our inquiry into 3D shapes by discovering their attributes, learning the vocabulary for this unit of work and how to draw cubes or cuboids. We have looked at nets of shapes and made the connection to how they fold to make a solid shape. The students have observed cuboids and drawn them from different perspectives.

In literacy this week we have asked questions, discussed the lines of inquiry and how they are connected to our learning and share our ideas together through a Think, Pair, Share thinking activity. The students have practised their handwriting, as well as learning new letter patterns to apply to spelling words. They have written answers to questions about sound and have shared their creative written piece with several listening partners. Through guided reading lessons, the students have identified characters, the action in the story, what the problem is and how it was solved.

This morning we all enjoyed watching the Grade 5 performance: ‘Jewel of Muscat’ which showcased the music, crafts and traditional work of Omanis.
