Weekly Photos Here!!!

How the World Works is an inquiry into light and sound. This week we focused on the scientific facts about sound. Students learned how we hear sound in our ears. They understand that a source sends out sound waves that go into our ear and cause a vibration that travels through to our brains. They understand what an echo is and how sound travels and hits an object and reflects back. We have begun a scientific observation. Ms. Fatma recorded them in the Sports Hall creating echoes and next week we will do the same in the Mazoon. They are going to compare and contrast the two spaces and the echoes they hear. We will begin learning the scientific facts about light next week. Once we have learned the facts about light and sound we will begin exploring objects that create sound and light.

In English this week the students have been working on reading comprehension. Three days this week they have read a short story and answered questions about the story. These stories are not just looking at close-ended questions, but also open-ended. They are making inferences, predictions or creating new ideas. The goal is that students are not just relying on the text, but their own prior knowledge and experiences. Next week our spelling words will be the days of the week. These are big words, so please support your child and encourage them to study at home. With your support they will be successful. We will continue with our phonics, reviewing prefixes and suffixes, silent e, glued sound -ive, and closed syllables. They will be re-introduced to open syllables and will take a closer look at the concept. An open syllable has one long vowel and ends in that vowel.

In math we have completed our unit on 3D shapes. Students focused on six three dimensional shapes. They learned about faces, vertices and edges. They determined if these shapes could roll, stack or slide. They are able to explain these attributes and what they are. Please ask your child, what makes a cube a cube? They should be able to tell you the number of faces, edges and vertices. Next week we will focus on symmetry and tessellating patterns. This will be an enjoyable week in math as it contains lots of coloring and drawing. They will learn the vocabulary words rotation, reflection and translation when looking at symmetry. A tessellation pattern is a type of tiling created by repeating shapes to cover a plane perfectly without any gaps or overlaps.
