In Grade 1C we have been reading stories, thinking about elements of a story- the characters, setting, problem and solution or the structure of a story. We talked about why we read stories, what they can teach us and, most importantly, what makes a good story.

Students have been creating their own stories, listening to traditional tales and re-telling them or sequencing stories. They are encouraged to write about why they like a story and draw the characters. They are busy rehearsing the Gingerbread Man for assembly this week and are helping each other read, recite or act out the story together.

We are continuing work on time, using clocks, pictures, games and written work to reinforce and support our understanding and ability to recognise o’clock time and say the correct time on both digital and analogue clocks. We are making a book that uses time to link to our Story Unit and will be bringing that home when completed.

Children work hard daily in their reading groups to read their book and learn their sight words. They have also worked in groups for maths and story sequencing. Their social skills are improving and they are taking turns, cooperating and listening to each other. It is an ongoing process and I invite all support from parents to always speak with children about how to treat each other and work together at school showing respect to each other and staff.

Students are showing how good they are becoming with phonics too, shown in the attached photos. We progressed beyond single sounds many weeks ago and they are recognising 2 letter sounds in words around the classroom constantly. This shows their print awareness has increased and improves their reading ability. Great to see!

Have a lovely weekend!
