Our Grade 10 MYP Visual Arts students are currently exploring the unit “Making a Bas-Relief Sculpture,” guided by the key concept of communication and the related concept of expression. In this project, students are creating a bas-relief sculpture that will later connect to a mosaic piece, using their artwork to communicate a personal message about a meaningful event in their lives or an activity they enjoy. After developing and refining ideas in their journals, students began working with clay slabs using the slab roller in the ceramics studio. They then transferred their designs onto the clay using needle tools and are now in the process of modeling, carving, and applying embossing techniques to build depth and detail. This hands-on process is allowing students to transform personal ideas into expressive visual forms while developing both technical skills and conceptual understanding.
