Weekly Photos Here!!!
This unit we are working on How the World Works and the central idea is ‘light and sound help people experience the world’. Our focus is on light and sound. This week we looked at the vocabulary words and the students completed a Freyer Model with these words. This means they defined, described and drew what these words mean. They have been displayed on our UOI board. These words include light, transparent, translucent, opaque, shadow, bright, shine, sound, echo, volume, loud, quiet, whisper, tone and pitch. The students will be assigned a home project for this unit. They will get the choice of either a light project or a sound project. Instructions will be shared on SeeSaw next week.
For English this week students researched vocabulary words for their Unit of Inquiry using dictionaries and iPads. They focused on prefixes and suffixes in their phonics lessons. The prefixes we have chosen to display in the classroom, with their meanings, are non-, mis-, re-, dis-, un- and pre-. Students also reviewed silent e and how it changes the e sound from short to long. Next week in phonics we will continue focusing on the silent e. We will look at how the /s/ sound changes to the /z/ sound when using an s with a silent e. An example of this is the word nose, it sounds like no/z/e. Students will begin reading in their EPIC library, nonfiction books about sound and light. I will simultaneously share videos about these subjects as well.
For maths this week students completed their unit on fractions. Students learned about whole, half, third, and quarter fractions. Today we completed our end of unit assessment. Next week we will go back into shapes, focusing on three dimensional shapes. We will look at cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, triangular prism and rectangular prism. Students will understand and identify faces, vertices, angles, and edges.
