I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable Eid celebration last week.
Maths: this week we have begun working on 2-digit number addition. We have completed the entry task of analysing a story problem, then creating our own questions for the problem and afterwards choosing those question which can be answered by the story problem. We used the Three-Read Protocol which is one way to do a close read of a complex math word problem or task. This strategy includes reading a math scenario three times with a different goal each time. The first read is to understand the context. The second read is to understand the mathematics. The third read is to elicit inquiry questions based on the scenario.
In this unit, students will alternate between:
- Solving addition problems in context, including measurement and money contexts;
- Developing addition strategies with tools that further their understanding of place value, including base-10 blocks, open number lines, and hundred charts; and
- Playing games that support their paper-and-pencil fluency with addition within 100.
Literacy: this week we have focused on completing our research reports on a chosen animal. The students have been supported in locating information using books or online resources and then applying this to their report. Included in the report is a story about the animal and we will be sharing those next week.
We have practised our handwriting and made new words using our knowledge of vowels and consonants. The students have joined new guided reading groups and have begun reading their books. During these sessions, we do book looks, identify vocabulary in the books and work on word, sentence or comprehension work. We have also worked on recognising nouns, verbs and adjectives.
UOI: The students have completed reviewed their diorama work and then completed a self-assessment of their work. They have also completed a unit reflection which highlights one thing they have learned, one fact about their animal and how they completed their research. Please see these assessments and reflections on your child’s Seesaw account.
Next week:
UOI: We will be starting a new, exciting unit of inquiry: How the world works where we will be finding out more about simple machines. Studying simple machines from a scientific lens helps students learn about the basic principles of how things work. Inquiring into machines is truly transdisciplinary with integration with reading, math and critical thinking skills, to name a few.
Literacy: We will begin working on procedural writing, also known as instructional writing. This genre works well with activities you do on a regular basis at home, such as brushing your teeth, making a sandwich or feeding your animals. Talk with your child about the steps needed to accomplish simple everyday tasks.
Guided reading, making words, expanding our vocabulary and practising handwriting will continue as a consistent component our our literacy programme.
Maths: Please see the explanation about about our current unit. We will be learning a variety of strategies to add 2 digit numbers and reviewing our understanding of place value, in particular using tens and ones to make numbers.
We’re starting the excitement early—Book Swap begins next week! Students can start bringing in books they wish to contribute to the “swap” library. Ms Maryam / Ms Juhaina will issue a ticket for each book brought in. These tickets need to be kept safe. The Book Swap day is 23rd April, on which students can pick as many books as the number of tickets they have.
