In literacy this week, we have:

  • reviewed nouns
  • begun to use adjectives to describe nouns
  • written descriptive sentences about people or objects
  • made words using the vowels a, i and o
  • practised writing ascender letters in handwriting
  • practised using capital letters and full-stops in complete sentences
  • listened to fiction and non-fiction texts
  • met with our guided reading groups to discuss texts, practise our reading strategies or learn new vocabulary
  • attended a Grade 3 mini-museum where we listened to presentations, asked questions and wrote feedback to the presenters

In maths this week, we have:

  • practised quickly recognising groups of shapes and knowing the amount (builds numerical fluency)
  • identified strategies of quickly counting shapes to arrive at a correct amount
  • discussed ways to find a missing amount through addition, subtraction, counting on or counting back
  • used ‘hefting’ (lifting up items to compare their mass) to identify which item is heavier or lighter than or has more mass or less mass
  • explored using balance scales to compare the mass of items
  • find equal and unequal masses of items
  • explained why something might have more or less mass
  • find the mass of items using non-standard measurements (unifix cubes)

In UOI this week, we have:

  • worked on our guided tiger research booklets where we are finding out what tigers are, what they can do, what they like, what they eat, where they live and what they look like
  • continued identifying features of habitats around the world
  • listened to ‘Wolf island‘ and completed a reflection sheet on the book/video
  • reviewed our central idea and lines of inquiry

Next week, we will:

Literacy:

  • make words using specific vowels and consonants
  • identify rhyming words
  • practise ascenders in handwriting
  • meet with our guided reading groups to read and discuss texts, learn new words, practise phonics and answer comprehension questions or identify features of the text
  • listen to fiction and non-fiction texts

Maths

  • continue practising numeracy in a variety of ways and identifying strategies
  • begin using standard mass measurements: grams, kilograms and tonnes
  • identify the abbreviations for the above names
  • measure items using balance scales
  • measure items using analogue scales
  • compare and contrast the mass of different items

UOI

  • explore the interdependence of organisms in a habitat through food chains and food webs
  • discuss our responsibilities to living things around the world
  • continue or tiger research
  • begin research of a chosen animal and its habitat
