It’s been another busy week in Grade 2.
In maths, we have shown our learning of place value by taking a 3-digit number, writing its name, showing it as an expanded form, making the number using base 10, finding it on a 1000 square, identifying greater than and less than and finally, placing it on a number line between hundreds. Using a variety of manipulatives has really allowed the students to explore the concept of place value and make the connection to the different ways a number can be made or written.
Reading and writing this week has been focused on our new unit: Sharing the planet, where we are finding out about habitats, including the animals which live in those habitats. We have begun learning about adaptations which allow animals to live in a place and the factors needed for animals to live (space, water, food, shelter, to be safe). Students can continue reading about animals and endangered animals, ecosystems and habitats using the Epic collections.
The students have just begun guided research based on tigers which will lead into their own chosen animal research when we return after the holiday. We have also worked on expanding our vocabulary by analysing words associated with our unit.
On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to explore the amazing Grade 6 PYP Exhibition where the Grade 6 students showcased all their learning they have accomplished during the last 6 years of their education in the PYP. The students did a truly incredible job with their inquiries and were able to present their work articulately with passion. Grade 2 students visited several exhibits to learn about eyes, hypnosis, chocolate and other inquiries. It was a great experience for them to know this is where their learning will take them in the future.
This morning we had our swimming gala where most of our students were able to participate in a backstroke or freestyle event and showcase their skills. It was an exciting morning for all involved!
Once we return from the holiday, we will continue with our phonics study, guided reading and working on our tiger research. We will go deeper into our learning about different habitats and what animals and plants live there, then moving on to food chains and food webs.
For maths, we will begin a unit on measuring mass using analogue, digital and balance scales. We will learn about grams and kilograms, then compare different items and their weights. We will also work on our estimating skills during this unit. Number will always be included in maths units as this is essential learning in the PYP. This can include, recognising the number of items by sight, skip counting by 2, 5, or 10s, identifying the place value of numbers up to a 1000 or placing numbers on a number line.
Wishing you a lovely holiday and sending wishes for a peaceful Ramadan to all who observe.
