This week Grade 1 started their new unit under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Organise Ourselves. We will be inquiring into how people work together to meet the needs and wants of their community.
We begin the process with a provocation, which checks students prior knowledge and gives us a starting point for building on that knowledge. Students had five minutes to share their ideas of what a town is and what is in it and we made a list on the white board. Students were then asked to draw a town in groups. They presented their town, explaining their drawing and we were able to add other ideas to our first list. The whiteboard photo shows both our initial thinking and then, after groups presented their town, the other things we added. After watching a video and a song about towns and communities, we extended our vocabulary and ideas further. Students revised their original drawings to add many more services and shops.
During Art today, Ms Sanaa gave us a great idea to make our own 3D paper buildings so we are creating a town full of the services we all need! This now leads us to considering our next line of inquiry about needs and wants in a community.
Happy long weekend everyone!
