Weekly Pictures HereĀ
We are so close to the completion of our unit ‘Where We Are In Place and Time.’ The homes our students have been completing throughout the week are looking great. They have been busy cutting, gluing, painting, and creating. I am sure they are excited to share their homes with the school and their parents January 20th during the school assembly. I hope everyone will be there to support them. Please ask them how they are getting along working with their group. Ask them what has been easy and what has been difficult? What have they enjoyed the most when completing their home?
For English this week we have worked on phonics, writing, and reading. For phonics we have been reviewing the glued sounds; olt, ost, ind, ild, and old. We introduced the vowel teams ai and ay spelling of the long vowel a sound. The rule for ai is that it occurs in between the word. The rule for ay is that it occurs at the end of a word. These rules will help the students not just with their reading, but also with their spelling. For writing this week we ‘Fixed the Sentence.’ The students really enjoyed working in partners correcting sentences. They spent time together hunting down the mistakes and fixing them. For reading not only did we work in our guided reading groups we completed a comprehension activity with our partners. In English we have been focusing on thinking skills. It is important that our students can read, but it is just as important that the students can recall and understand what they are reading. You can read to your child at night and ask them questions when you have completed a page or two. Those questions could be prediction questions or recall questions. What do you think will happen next? Can you tell me what just happened?
This week in math we used the meter sticks to measure the height of the students in their groups. The groups then wrote down the order of the students from shortest to tallest. We measured vegetables to the exact centimeter and millimeter. We then recorded the information in our Math Journals. I can say that the students can definitely measure to the centimeter. Practice measuring at home using millimeters.
Next week we will continue in English working on writing sentences, reading comprehension, phonics skills and our reading skills. In math we will continue with measurement using centimeters and millimeters, as well as addition. For our Unit of Inquiry we will be completing ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’ and introducing the next unit ‘Sharing the Planet.’
