Good afternoon,
With the start of a new month on Sunday, it was time for the children to draw their monthly self-portraits. You may recall that this is a regular activity where we encourage the children to observe and represent their facial features. Using just a pencil, paper and a mirror, they carefully study their reflections and record what they see. It is exciting to watch as their skills develop over the months -not just their drawing abilities but also their observational skills. Many of the self-portraits now include features like eyebrows, eyelashes, and even teeth, that weren’t present earlier in the school year. From time to time, we review these monthly drawings with each child so they can see their own progress, which is both fun and rewarding.
As part of our literacy learning, we have been highlighting the roles of the author and illustrator for every book we read together. We explain that the author writes the words, while the illustrator creates the pictures. This week, we focused more closely on these important roles by exploring photographs of the authors and illustrators behind some of our favorite books. We looked at the author/illustrator of the class favorite, No, David! as a group. Then, in smaller groups, the children selected books from a selection, and we shared photographs of the authors and illustrators before reading the stories together. Seeing real photos of these individuals helped the children understand and appreciate that the books we read are actually created by talented and creative people. We also made the connection that when the children create stories or narratives for adults to write down, they are authors themselves! You can see photos below of the children engaging in this activity.
Finally, a reminder about the upcoming ABIS ‘Fun Run & Walk Challenge’. KG1, KG2, and G1 students are invited to take part this coming Sunday, 8th December. The event will take place bright and early, from 8:00 am to 8:20 am, on the running track located behind the swimming pools at the back of the school. Children are encouraged to complete as many laps as possible to earn points for their house team. Please drop your child in the classroom on Sunday morning and we will walk over together. If you arrive after 8am, please accompany your child to the track (after dropping their belongings at the classroom). Students are asked to wear their house color t-shirt for the event. Throughout the week, laps from all grades will be totaled, and the house with the most laps will be announced as the winner. If you are unsure of your child’s house color, please check here.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
Kristina, Buthaina and Rahma
