Weekly Pictures HereĀ

The Unit of Inquiry; Where We Are in Place and Time is coming along very nicely. This week our groups were actively engaged in a Read Aloud of the book, If You Lived Here by Giles Laroch. We looked at the pictures while students identified the environment, the climate, and the materials the houses were built with. Today, we used pictures from that same book for our student groups. The students created a mind map by addressing six questions. Where do you think this house is located? Describe what you see in the picture. What do you think the temperature is like? What types of materials were used to build this house? Why do you think this house is designed the way it is? What shapes were used to build this house? Remind your children that research skills and self-management skills will be very important during this Unity of Inquiry.

In English we have been looking at nonfiction text. I read aloud an article, “Rondavels in Southern Africa.” The students then helped me complete their first Information Map. The focus is the title, main idea, details, and vocabulary. For their first time, I believe they did a great job. For 6 + 1 Traits of Writing we will continue looking at Ideas while focusing on details. We will also be looking at fact and opinion. UOI, Literacy, and Writing are all related to create a better understanding on how we can use these skills in real world situations.

For math we are completing the topic of 2D and 3D shapes. I will use the same pre-assessment as the post assessment next week. The students will need to identify 2D shapes; square, rectangle, triangle, circle, oval, pentagon, and hexagon. They need to identify corners, sides, and angles. They will need to identify 3D shapes; sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, and cone. Does the 3D shape roll or stack? They need to locate the edges, vertices, and faces. We will also continue adding numbers up to 100 with and without regrouping.

Congratulations to all the primary students and their wonderful performances at the Winter Concert!!

Reading every night for 20 minutes will help your child become not just a better reader, but also better prepared for all subjects in school. Support your children and encourage them to complete 20 minutes of reading in English every night.
