Dear families,
We hope you all enjoyed the Omani National Day long weekend and were able to spend some time together as families.
This week, as part of our inquiry into how ‘we communicate our imaginative thinking and feelings in many ways’ and we enjoyed exploring music as a medium for sharing emotions. The children listened to three very different pieces of music and were asked how the music made them feel. They were clear that The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, made them feel happy. The next one, Piano Sonata No 2, by Fédéric Chopin sounded sad, according to the children. Finally, we listened to Night on Bald Mountain by composer Modest Mussorgsky. This one sounded ‘scary’, the children decided! We discussed what Night on Bald Mountain made the children think of, and they shared many creative ideas. Later, while listening to this “scary”-sounding music, they were invited to draw pictures. Their artwork included sharks, dinosaurs, monsters, dragons, lions, and zombies. Later in the week, the children listened to two songs that both focused on rain in the lyrics but had very different moods. They were then invited to paint while listening to the upbeat and cheerful song, ‘Singing in the Rain’. These paintings included many rainbows, clouds and ‘happy colours’.
As part of mathematical learning this week, children participated in a physically active counting game to match objects to their corresponding numerals. Large number-tiles were spread out in an open space, while small containers filled with counters were placed in one area. The children selected a container, counted the counters inside, and then ran to place it on the tile showing the matching numeral. This was a fun way to count objects and recognise numerals that also incorporated movement. There was a lot of laughter involved! Below you will see some pictures of the children enjoying this challenge.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
Kristina, Rahma and Buthaina
