We have had a busy week of inquiry learning. Students continue to ask questions and find out about the Earth and what it is made from. We do this in different ways to help us understand and to return to new concepts and vocabulary. We have made models, watched videos, labelled diagrams, sung a song and we are in the process of making our own Earth play-dough model to show the 4 layers of the Earth. We check our understanding and students are encouraged to help each other with new understanding and difficult words too.

Our other main focus has been shapes. Many of us knew something about shapes so we start by sharing our knowledge and understanding. Then we add more understandings by exploring, discussing and asking questions. We extend our knowledge of shapes and learn to describe them. We started with a look at the world around us- our classroom, school and playground. We saw that shapes are everywhere! This learning involves a lot of new vocabulary so, as with our Earth layers inquiry, we have different activities like games, songs, pattern- making and Guess the Shape sessions. In this way, students revisit the concepts and words in may ways and keep their interest with various challenges. We worked in small groups with a ‘feely bag’- where we have to feel a shape and describe it without looking. We will be making our own shape books too.

Happy weekend to all my inquirers and their families!
