Dear Parents,

Another busy week in Grade 6 has flown by. We are nearing the end of our Sharing the Planet unit about conflict and getting ready to launch the PYP Exhibition next week. Here are some key dates that I need you to put into your calendars.

Thursday, December 12th – Parent Open House 1  – 8 – 8.50am. An optional chance for you to come into the Grade 6 space and talk to the children about their fledgling ideas and how they are setting up their inquiries.

Thursday, January 23rd – Parent open House 2 – 8 – 8.50am. An optional chance for you to come into the Grade 6 space and see how the inquiries are growing. Also, an opportunities to offer your perspectives, expertise and skills to guide some of the students.

Thursday, February 6th – Parent Open House 3 – 8 – 8.50am. An optional chance to come to the Grade 6 space and to see how the inquiries are being synthesized and are coming together. This will be the last chance for you to see the student’s work until the big finale of the 26th February (below).

Wednesday, February 26th – PYP Exhibition Finale for Parents – 5- 6.30pm at the Mazoon. Children will stay at school on this day from 3-5pm where we will watch a movie together in the Grade 6 space. This is the end point and the most exciting event for the students of the Exhibition. It is really important that you all attend, so please put this date into your calendar and do whatever it takes to make it possible for you to attend on this day!

This week in Literacy we have been working on our digital skills and strategies to turn our conflict resolution ideas into visually exciting and engaging posters using Canva. Hopefully some of these posters will inspire students when they are having tricky days during the Exhibition. We have also been proceeding at speed with our book club rotations. Ask your child what book they are currently reading and what their views are.

In Mathematics, we have been concluding the probability and chance elements of our stand alone mathematical unit. The students have been designing, building and playing on each others chance games. See this week’s Seesaw for more details and some images below.

In our Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry, the students have been researching a conflict of their choice, taking notes, paraphrasing and placing thee information onto their own websites. This will be a valuable tool during the PYP Exhibition, as the children will be documenting their learning / process on their own Google Site which they will manage over the 10 week project.

Next Week…

Exhibition – we will have a week to explore, ponder and play with all the 1000s of ideas that ‘could’ make up each child’s PYP Exhibition. Making the right choice is so important. The students will then have next weekend to make a decision and will hopefully begin their inquiries on the 2nd week (week starting on the 8th December). The students will have to prove their passion for the inquiry, that there is longevity (10 weeks of learning) in their idea and that the inquiry will have a connection to our community.

This will take up the bulk of the week, we will though still be doing our book clubs and we will also start the next phase of our math unit looking at data.

Have a great weekend,

Matt
