Thank you for everyone’s flexibility this week, as we navigate our way though weather related online days. This is not ideal, but I believe it is still possible for meaningful learning to occur during such online scenarios if we all approach it with positivity and open minds.

This morning (Thursday) I have been collecting valuable data from the students so that I know how to tweak and make the experience better for them in future online ‘rain days’. Please see some of their data below.

  • A mixed reaction to online learning and a clear message from the students that the expectations were not clear enough.

75% of the class attended all or most of the sessions. The majority of the class also thought that the work load was about right.

This data shows that Google Classroom is the most common platform that students use to get information outside of school. It also shows that many students had frustrations over connection issues using Google Meet.

Where We are in Place and Time – as a final activity to bring together our last line of inquiry looking at how migration can impact identity, we created our own migration plans. Students shared the reasons that might cause them to migrate to this country, how their migration might affect those closest to them and how potentially the migration could impact their identity. There have been lots of Seesaw posts this week, so I will ask the students to upload these mini inquiries next week.

Mathematics – we have been learning how to add and subtract fractions where the denominators are like and unlike. We have also been learning about equivalent fractions and how fractions representing the same amount of a whole can look different. For example – 1/2 is equivalent to 5/10, but it is just represented in a different form.

Literacy – Due to the online learning we did not get as far as I had wanted, but we were able to do some sessions on using paragraphs and speech marks accurately. The students were also able to get close to completing their first drafts of their personal narratives onto a Google Doc.

Next Week

Unit of Inquiry – we will be beginning a new unit of inquiry under the theme of ‘Sharing the Planet’. More information next week on this.
