This week we began our new unit of inquiry: How we organise ourselves. In this unit we will be focusing on how community spaces can support our well-being. We have competed a See, Think, Wonder activity where we had a look at the desert from our school car park, then had a walk around the grounds of ABIS. We discussed the differences and how each of these spaces made us feel and why they make us feel that way. We touched upon well-being and what that means to and for us. Constructing our understanding of this concept will continue next week. As you are visiting places in Sohar, Muscat or other places in Oman, please talk with your child about how these spaces make them feel. We will be looking at developed community spaces, such as parks, playgrounds and we will also look at natural spaces and how they support our well-being.

In maths, we have begun working on numbers within 100, finding different ways to represent numbers and discussing the strategies we might use to solve problems. The students have shared their thinking and reasoning behind their understanding. We will continue exploring place value using a variety of representations. Your child can be supported in this understanding through practise using:

Tens and ones

In literacy, we are continuing to make words using letter patterns, changing the beginning and ending sounds, identifying vowels and finding rhyming words. This week we practised holding our pencils correctly, sitting properly and aligning our pages so we can develop neat and legible handwriting. In reading, we learned about what reading looks like in our learning space and practised this to build our stamina in reading. The students are doing a great job of remembering to read their take home books and returning them on a regular basis. Please support your child’s reading by having them read aloud to you or a family member using either the books which have been sent home or reading RAZKids online. Reading is an essential component of the grade 2 curriculum and is the foundation of your child’s academic education.

We have begun our guided reading groups; either Ms Suad or myself will be meeting with small groups to share reading books, talk about our understandings, build or reading strategies and developing specific skills connected to reading. It’s been fun to finally meet in these small groups and work together to develop our reading skills. Soon, I will be encouraging the students to record their reading on RAZKids so they can hear their pronunciation and fluency.
