This week, the G4 AAL students continued their learning journey about the ABIS recycling process and its various steps.
The students collected recyclables from the designated recycling stations and transported them to the “Big Dog” for further processing. A truck had already been scheduled for pickup, and when it arrived, the students assisted the custodians in loading the recyclables onto the truck.
During this process, the students observed several issues with our current system. They noticed a design flaw in the recycling bins at the stations, making them less user-friendly. Additionally, while the school is making efforts to reduce plastic usage and promote sustainability, they saw that a significant amount of plastic is still being used to transport materials from the Big Dog to the truck.
As a result, the school is currently working on redesigning the bins to be more functional and user-friendly. At the same time, teachers are exploring options for sustainable collection bags that can be used on a rotational schedule to improve efficiency.
We encourage everyone to continue supporting ABIS’s sustainability efforts by bringing recyclables in reusable containers so that materials can be directly dropped into the larger collection sites.
