Reports are home today. A huge well done to all of our students, who have made significant progress since the start of the year. Learning has really levelled up this year and there has been so much new knowledge to take onboard and new skills to develop throughout the first semester, that it is really important to discuss the report with your child and celebrate their learning victories with them. Grade 5 is a tough year, and students really need to work harder than ever in semester two to prepare for Exhibition in Grade 6, and the transition into Middle School. We will be here to support them every step of the way and do our very best to make learning fun, and we know you will be there to support them at home.

Students were out and about on campus revolving around each other! They were trying to replicate the Sun, Earth & Moon rotations, many with hilarious results. Our research groups have been gathering information about their chosen areas of inquiry about Space. They have been facing challenges as they try to search for specific information and have been learning how to write more accurate search phrases to return more student friendly results.

In language we have been examining all of the ingredients needed for opinion writing. Students are seeking to find three goods reasons why their area of Space research deserves funding from the Grade 5 Government (Miss Rachel & Ms Khadija). They have to back up their reasoning with some good evidence and compelling explanations. In a Shark Tank/Dragon’s Den type situation, each team will be pitching their opinions and hoping to persuade us to agree with them and award them the ‘research funding’. In reading we explored both fiction and non-fiction Space related books and used many different platforms to access specific information.

In maths this week we were learning to divide decimals by single-digit whole numbers involving easily identifiable multiples using place value understanding and relate to a written method. This seems scary initially, but using what they already know, students decomposed the numbers to leave them with easier numbers to calculate.

We wish you all a peaceful weekend. Best wishes, Miss Rachel & Ms. Khadija
