This week in Grade 5 has been all about Teams. There has been so much fun and friendly competition as House Teams got together to work on house chants in preparation for today’s assembly, for such a short learning and practice time, I hope you agree that they did amazingly well! It was fantastic to see so many of you with us today for the House Team picnic, and it is so important for us to build up these school/home relationships, so that your child can see that we are ALL on the same team when it comes to supporting their learning.

Students also took place in an Inter-House handball tournament on Wednesday, it was exciting and much enjoyed by the students. Lots of emotions were dealt with, including disappointment for the teams that didn’t win. As we all know, it’s not possible for everyone to be winners, and as PYP students, one of the most important skills we are learning is to be reflective. Instead of getting mad and sad, look at personal victories – what did we do well, what can we do better next time? Maybe it was dealing with our disappointment, maybe we helped out our team mates? Everyone agreed they had fun, so that in itself is a form of winning. As caring individuals, we can learn to be happy for our friends who were on the winning team. We may be in different House Teams, but we are all an important part of the Grade 5 team. Learning how to deal with disappointment is such a great life skill that makes for happier adults in the future.

In UOI this week, we have been learning about the different types of forces and working together to form our design teams for the creation of Rube Goldberg machines. Final teams will be announced at the start of next week, and the planning of chain reaction contraptions to solve ‘a problem’ will begin. In Language we have been reading narratives together and starting to explore the form and function of the different elements of narrative writing to give us a clearer understand of how we can write our own narratives.

We wish you all a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you at the 3 Way Conferences next week.
