Grade 5 have been very fortunate to have a presentation given to them, as part of their Social Emotional Learning, about personal hygiene. This was delivered by Dr. Neha Danish Sardar. MBBS, MD, MRCOG, FICOG, and we thank her so much for supporting our Grade 5 learning community. This also ties in nicely with our UOI focus on communities and our rights and responsibilities as members of the Grade 5 community. It is our responsibility to look after our own personal hygiene, not only for ourselves, but to be caring to others. Nobody likes stinky body parts!

Please parents, if you have any knowledge or skills that you can offer to share with us, please let us know, as we would love to have as many of you as possible involved with the learning in Grade 5 this year.

By popular demand, Anime was the theme chosen for our reading groups in Grade 5. Introducing: Titans, Narutos, Plutos and Orbital Children. Thank you Beni for helping out with the groups display!

We also did a mini inquiry in maths into different strategies we can use for multiplication. Thank you Janna for the photographs. We found these ones (can you think of more?):

In language we have been exploring the form and function key concepts of writing biographies. We have been learning how to take notes using graphic organisers so that we can use these to help us when it comes to writing. In Unit of Inquiry we started to explore Human Rights using a 3-2-1 Pyramid to pull out things we learned, things we found interesting and questions we still have. We finished the week with an on demand writing assessment and the progress that has been made by the majority of our students in writing since the start of the year was amazing.

Grade 5 is a big year for our students. It is the year when they must become more independent as learners. Students are finding that they are experiencing much more voice, choice and ownership. They have been learning about good choices and bad choices in relation to the Grade 5 learning community. This is now extending into their learning as they are encourage to make choices using the “Goldilocks’ method. Choosing something too easy is a bad choice, as it doesn’t challenge them. Choosing something too hard is a bad choice as it will be too difficult and overwhelm them. They are being encouraged to choose what is ‘just right’ for them. This could be related to the work they are doing OR how they are doing it.

Please help us to help the students to take complete ownership of their learning, especially home learning. Please DO take an interest, encourage them to complete their home learning tasks, and guide them when they need support. Please DO NOT do their home learning for them. They will never be given anything we have not covered in class and they are fully encourage to take photographs of their learning in class to help them at home. Let’s work together to make Grade 5 a successful year for everyone.

Have a wonderful long weekend. Best wishes from the G5 Team.
