Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company, part of Oman’s national oil company OQ, has started trial operations for the crude oil distillation unit at the 230 kb/d Duqm refinery, located in central Oman. The start of trials indicates operational readiness for all units, as the facility is expected to start commercial operations by the end of 2023. The large-scale distillation done above can be done in the lab at a smaller scale. Simple distillation simply refers to the selective boiling and subsequent condensation of a component in a liquid mixture. The process of distillation exploits the difference in the boiling points of the components in the liquid mixture by forcing one of them into a gaseous state.
