Even though the weather can be oppressively hot and humid, one key factor for me to meet my running goals is to follow routines. One of the simplest (but often the hardest to follow through with) is to get off the sofa and walk, jog, trot, run, and so on. Sometimes I’ll spend a slower hour walking with my daughter, sometimes I’ll spend a quicker hour picking up my pace to a podcast, and sometimes I’ll spend what seems like an eternity just grinding out a workout.
In many ways, the routines of our learning community mirror these impressions. Sometimes, we’ll spend a slower hour figuring something out, sometimes we’ll spend a quicker hour engaged in learning–when it seems a lot shorter, and sometimes, we’ll spend what seems like forever sticking with our routines. One ginormous benefit of me looping up with this group of students is how quickly and smoothly we re-established routines to get to high quality learning and teaching. And. We. Have.
On Wednesday this week, we relaunched workshops: Minds-On Math, Reader’s, and Writer’s. In Minds-On Math Workshop, we tuned in to an inquiry on ratios by working with different presentations, applying this to ourselves, personalizing ratios based on our own observations. In Reader’s Workshop, we chose books and dove into character traits. In Writer’s Workshop, we began writing a personal narrative about an important episode with as much detail as possible. In our Unit of Inquiry: Who We Are, we found out about each other through standing maps, a growth mindset activity, and a KWLH chart. We had a great third week and please use the following link for details: G6 in Pictures W3.
Home Learning – aka Homework
Mr. Nicholson and I have changed this schedule; it works out better for us to provide feedback. We’ll collect notebooks on Sunday and send them out again on Tuesday. We’ll continue with daily Must Dos and Can Do tasks that extend learning.
