WEEK 31

Dear Parents and Guardians of KG1,

During the week, we initiated discussions on the selection of appropriate materials for creating specific products, and the reasons behind these choices. Our young students were introduced to the properties of different materials such as mass, pliability, texture, strength and colour. We provided them with opportunities to feel, perceive and analyze various materials such as wood, foam, wire, stone, metal, wool, paper and glass. Our students were highly engaged in these activities and demonstrated a keen interest in learning more about the properties of materials.

Some of these activities included: making ‘foam’ cats with bendy tails, creating our own pizzas for our Pizza Party, painting on balloons versus painting on paper, wetting crepe paper to create a paint effect and playing with play-dough.

We encouraged our students to ask questions and share their observations, and they were able to make connections between the materials and the products they use in their daily lives. For instance, they were able to identify that plastic is commonly used to make toys and containers because it is lightweight and durable, while metal is used for building structures because of its strength and sturdiness.

In Mathematics, our young students engaged in various activities that have fostered the development of our critical thinking skills and mathematical knowledge. These activities have included counting forwards and backwards from 1 to 5, as well as counting forwards from 1 to 10. Additionally, they have been practicing the identification of number values, which has enabled them to consolidate their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Furthermore, we are pleased to report that our students are making considerable progress in the area of writing, literacy, and spoken English. They have been diligently working on developing their fine motor skills by learning how to hold a crayon or color pencil properly. They have been encouraged to express themselves creatively through painting and drawing stories. In addition to this, they have been listening to and telling their own stories, which has contributed to the development of their linguistic skills and reinforced their English language proficiency.

To continue enhancing their Communication and Social Skills, we encouraged our students on a daily basis to:

  • utilize English terminology when conversing with their classmates
  • participate in sharing and taking turns
  • conduct themselves with integrity and respect for others, which is of utmost importance
  • exhibit benevolence and empathy towards their peers, which should be a regular practice
  • ensure that every student is included in their games
  • foster their listening skills by following instructions given in class and at home.
