Homework: This week for homework, students have continued their daily reading, Math basic facts practice, Nessy/ RAZ/ Epic and weekly spelling words. Students have also been asked to re ignite their PYP exhibition inquiries as we again bring this unit into focus.
Reading, Writing and Inquiry: For reading this week, students continued to practise their reading skills to grow their ability to read for meaning, with fluency and comprehension. This week students have also worked hard to complete their unit of inquiry on Climate change, concluding with a group debate on issues related to climate change. They have completed a number of learning engagements designed for them to showcase their understanding of how human actions can impact earth’s climate. They have researched climate change, contributing factors and discussed a shared responsibility towards conservation and responsible stewardship of the planet and its resources through writing a persuasive essay.
How you can help at home: Ask your children to share their research, writing and reasoning with you. Spending time modelling reading, writing and inquiry, talking about reading and writing and having an inquiring mind provides a very positive model for your children to follow.
Maths: This week, students have continued to work on developing their understanding of how to work with fractions. They were able to define what a fraction is, learnt the parts of a fraction, applied ‘divisibility hacks’ as well as learning how to simplify improper fractions and how fractions, decimals and percentages might be used interchangeably.
How you can help at home: By recognising real life math and language in the world around us and providing authentic opportunities to identify and use both math and language skills to solve real life problems. Contextualised learning is very powerful so if the students can use what they have learnt inside school, outside of school this will help them to retain this knowledge and hone their skills.
Please also help your children use their Nessy, RAZ kids, Epic and Prodigy accounts for numeracy and literacy practice as part of their homework.
