Dear Parents and Students,
Holiday bells are ringing! What a fantastic first half of the year!
Time has really flown by quickly.
This week, the majority of our students had an extremely busy week, with the Arabic exams on the run.
To be honest, the students did seem quite stressed out and we did have short power-up breaks before and after the breaks to help a little bit.

Integrated Unit of Inquiry
- Conclusion of our unit of inquiry into ‘Flight’ and scientific innovation: Finally, we concluded our Unit on Flights by completing our PET bottle rocket experiment. The students had fun today launching them in the open field.
- Exhibition: We have also successfully completed drafting of the central ideas for the exhibition. That was two units this week, going hand in hand. This was possible, thanks to the progress the students have made in their self-management skills, and this allowed smooth transition from one to another. A big thank you also to the grade 7 students that came to visit us and impart some of their wisdom about this with the current grade 6 students.
- Unit on Migration: As a part of last day fun and as a provocation into our brand new unit on Migration, we watched some interesting and impressive video clips from movies and TV shows showing human and animal migration.Spoiler Alert: This unit on Migration will bring in a lot of real world issues, including refugee crisis, violation of human rights and discrimination, that are inherent in migration stories in the past and the present. Students will be exposed to a number of ‘unfairy’ tales in the coming days after the holidays.
Language
Our reading groups have been working really well on different reading skills including making predictions, drawing inferences, identifying settings and characters, recalling facts and details etc. In writing, we revisited our understanding of Personal Recounts and analysed some samples to come up with tips like writing about the significant events only and not listing down all the events, using varied connectives instead of just using ‘and then’, adding details to the significant events by describing the setting, characters and emotions, using a sizzling start to hook the readers in before writing the what, who, when, where and why about the events. Also, in order to ‘ban the boring bits’, we learnt some interesting ways to begin a sentence, by using the acronym ‘ISPACE’ and we tried writing sentences beginning with an -ing verb, simile, preposition, adverb, conjunction and -ed verbs.
Mathematics
This week’s highlight was students learning to find square roots of some perfect squares. This made the math maintenance interesting as we figured out and applied the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. Well-done!.
