Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to a review of our first week back after the term 1 break. We have had a busy productive week and have enjoyed our learning. Please see below for notices and highlights…
Grade 6 Week 10 in pictures:2022 2023
Reading and writing
This week our readers and writers have worked on reflecting on their learning goals for the year so far as well as continuing to develop their research and writing skills as they work to publish their Bio-Mimicry presentations for their flight unit. Some students who completed their bio mimicry slides early got to do research in small groups. Each group chose a man-made flying object like a kite, jet pack, jet plane, drone, rocket and helicopter and researched on the scientific principle behind how it works.
Mathematics
This week in Math, students have focused on multiplication and division. The daily math maintenance included recalling times tables and identifying patterns. Students also applied their knowledge to solve two-digit multiplication problems using the column strategy and had fun learning the Japanese multiplication trick using lines. Students started making connections between multiplication and division by writing fact families and identifying factor pairs for the given products representing them in the form of factor rainbows.
Integrated UOI
This week students continued to work on developing their understanding of the scientific principles of flight. Through a personal connection students have had the pleasure of watching a real life video of the first African woman hot air balloon pilot flying her balloon over the Masai Mara in Kenya. Students have written a piece of procedural writing about how to set up, fly and land a hot air balloon and have prepared questions for the Hot air Balloon flight captain for a planned online interview with her next week.
Home learning/ Homework
Thank you for your continued support with home learning. As a minimum, homework should consist of reading and mathematics and take no more than one hour per day. Students are provided with a home learning task sheet to complete every week however if they are unable to complete this please write a note regarding this on their homework books and continue to sign this as a record that you have sighted their books. If you have any questions about home learning please do not hesitate to contact us about this.
Thank you.
