Hello everyone,

Well it’s been another busy week in Grade 5.

We have been exploring the concept of Fair Trade. In teams we built shared definitions and then the students took on the role of banana farmers in a developing country and had to “grow” (draw) a perfect banana to sell to the teachers’ company, “Ace Banana International Sohar.” Only 2 were accepted as high quality and offered a very low (unfair) price. Students then looked at the role of Fair Trade and how this helps poor farmers negotiate fair prices and conditions.

In Art we built on the idea of Fair Trade and Follow the Frog, Rainforest Alliance and the concept of perseverance to create detailed drawings of frogs.

In Language we have been looking at balanced arguments, then rehearsing and  presenting them in front of each other. We reflected on how good presentation skills can help convince an audience to a different point of view.

In Mathematics we are continuing our inquiries into perimeter and area. We have been exploring ways to calculate areas of rectangles using multiplication rather than counting squares and how algebra can help us find unknown perimeter and areas. Next week we will be challenging ourselves to calculate the areas of triangles, parallelograms and circles.

Both fasting and non fasting students have been organising their spaces and time and been very considerate of each others’ needs during Ramadan.

Have a wonderful weekend
