The ATL skills that have been the focus this week are communication and self-reliance. What has to be done post the mocks is an in-depth reflective activity to ensure that the grade 12 scientists can move forward with what they have learnt about themselves.

As said by Margaret J. Wheatley

“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.”

This is so true of the whole mock examination process, the actual examinations are but one step of the process. Yes, we all have a snapshot of the learning to date; a summative assessment used primarily to compare students against an external standard. What we then do with this information is where we use the assessment as learning which focuses on teaching students the metacognitive ( awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes), to evaluate their own learning and make adjustments.”  We will try to guide the students to take responsibility for their own learning but:

“No matter how good teaching may be, each student must take the responsibility for his own education.” – John Carolus
