Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the end of week 22. A shorter week but still another busy week of home learning online.

For photos of students hard at work learning this week please see our Grade 6 Picture page linked below.

Notices/ Worth Repeating

For many reasons it can be difficult and frustrating working online especially when the internet is not working well and you get ‘bumped’ out of a meeting. Well done to everyone that has been in this situation- it is impressive to see that students are able to take this in their stride and find a ‘work around’.

Homework

This week for homework, as we are online, we are very mindful of the amount of screen time students are having, this has been minimal. Students have been asked to learn their spelling words to read hard copy books and to revise their basic facts.

Reading, Writing and Inquiry

Central Idea:

Human migration is a response to challenges, risks and opportunities.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Reasons why people migrate
  • Migration patterns
  • The effects of migration on communities and individuals

This week the main focus has been on completing biographies of famous immigrants as well as the marking of this against specific success criteria. Students were able to peer review and reflect on their learning in light of this. Please ask your children about their research because they have done great work.

Next week we will begin a new unit with the central idea:

Human actions impact climates.

For this we will inquire into…

  • Human and natural causes of climate change
  • Effect of climate change on animals
  • Effect of climate change on biomes

Mathematics

This week for math online, as we do in class, we completed our math maintenance and also worked on problems of measurement, time and angles. This week we also began a new unit on shape and space that links in with geometry. For this students have been learning about different shapes, what to call them and the different attributes of these shapes.

Visual Art

This week we continue to work on our creative art as a form of self expression. Please see our photo page for examples of student work in this area.

PSPE

This week we have been following along and copying an online instructor doing a workout and learning about nutrition at the same time as answering questions about the exercises and nutrition, that’s what we have been up to. We enjoyed this.

Next week:

Next week it will be a shorter week however the plan is to be back on campus, live and in person.  I will send our usual Sunday morning email about the week ahead.

As we move back into on campus, Mask to Mask, in person learning next week, please see  a few important reminder below:

  • We will continue to stay in grade level bubbles until further notice.  This includes lunch and recess, eating and playing in our designated areas.
  • Miss Margot will visit classrooms for Information Literacy classes rather than classes visiting the library. This is in order to preserve the Grade 4 bubble.
  • Music and PE will continue as normal.
  • Swimming during PE will begin the week of February 20th.
  • In order to maintain bubbles, ASA’s are on hold until further notice.
  • It’s important to be consistent and vigilant regarding our protocols around health and safety in relation to Covid.

For our Grade 6 schedule please see the link here: Grade 6 schedule.

Wishing you a great long weekend ahead.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincere regards,

Your partners in learning.
