Dear Parents and Students,
I hope these few words find you well. It is hard to believe but yes another busy week has come and gone.
Please see below a review of the week.
Homework
Today we completed our homework set for the week with positive results especially in the area of spelling development. Thank you for checking and signing this because this shows the importance of completing activities at home to consolidate learning. This also gives you an insight into your children’s lives as students.
Reading and writing
During this week learners have continued to work on developing reading and writing skills. This week we students have completed a number of assessments for reading, writing, and listening. One of the writing pieces students completed was a quick write on the subject of ‘Who Inspires me’ In this piece, students were asked to write about a person that inspired or helped them as well as the how of that. I was very impressed to note that there were lots of Mums and Dads as heroes and as people that inspired and helped their sons and daughters. You are very much appreciated 🙂
Please see below some examples of their work this week.
Mathematics
This week in Math, students learned a new math game called ‘Race to 2000′. In this game students were tasked with placing single numbers into place value holding spots to create numbers that when added reached as close to 2000 as possible. This is a great quick game that you can also play at home to work on developing number sense and place value understanding. Please talk to you children about this as they all seemed to like this and were excited to challenge themselves in this game. Are you as smart as a 6th grader? Students also continued to work on developing their basic facts as well place value and their ability to translate numbers into words.
Please see below for an example of the kind of learning engagements students worked on.
Challenge yourself, are you able to complete the task?
Integrated UOI
This week we have begun our new unit with the central idea that “Flight Inspires Scientific Innovation”. One of the things that students completed this week was a creative title page in their unit of inquiry books for this unit. As part of homework students also completed a list of things that they believe are able to ‘Fly’. This will serve as a great discussion starter next week when we look at definitions and what flying actually is.
Please see below for samples of this work.
Social Studies
Over the past three weeks we have been looking at how the sea is such an important part of life in Oman. As part of this learning, students were given the opportunity to create a piece of art on top of a natural sea shell collected from the beach.
Please see below for some samples of this work.
