Hello everyone,

This week in Mathematics we have been exploring different ways to tackle addition problems. We used column addition, number lines, 100 squares and partitioning. We then decided to share our skills in a “How to Video” that could help others learn. We are starting to explore strategies to solve word problems using the CUBES strategy. We related all this learning to our concept of  perspective – we need to choose a strategy that works best for us.

In Language we have continued to build our researching skills – we looked at sorting research into paragraphs from multiple sources about Martin Luther King Jr, Roald Dahl and JK Rowling. We even wrote poems inspired by Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech.  We have also been adding to our writing “toolkit” of skills – how to punctuate quotes and how to use hook techniques to entice readers using an eye-catching title.

In Unit of Inquiry we have been starting our personal inquiries in Human Rights activists that we are inspired by. These include Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, Sultan Qaboos, Zahara Al Aufia, Greta Thunberg , Malala Yousafzai and many more. In Art and Design we learnt how to design book covers for these biographies using the design software https://www.canva.com/ . The students showed off their creativity and IT skills.

Cyclone Shaheen : We are so proud of our Grade 5 students with the empathy they have shown to all those affected by Cyclone Shaheen. We would like to thank all students and families who have already donated items, money and time to support those in need and it has been so impressive to hear students sharing what they have done. Mr Robeau and Ms Zuweina met with the acting Executive Director of Jusoor, Ahmed Ibrahim Al Naqbi, who is helping to coordinate relief efforts. We discussed how ABIS students could contribute to the local community, recycling and collections for the people who suffered from the cyclone. He said that vouchers for LULU’s  (or any large supermarket) would be of more use for families than other types of donations. He suggested that the students could raise a number of vouchers, which can then be donated with Jusoor’s assistance to identified families.

If your family would like to donate vouchers or some money for vouchers, please send it in with your child next week. (17-21 October) and we will ensure the vouchers are purchased and distributed to those in need.
