Today was a very exciting day for the students. Each child brought in an item they no longer needed hoping they could swap for something they wanted. We started the ‘Swap Shop’ by walking round the tables to see what was available. If they saw something they were interested in a token was placed next to the item.

The students then interacted with each other, taking care to remain distanced at all times. The trade then began which was wonderful to observe because everyone was respectful to each other and used thoughtful language. Some items were popular and the students had to make a decision about which item offered for trade they were interested in.

I was pleased to see the students start to use persuasive language as part of the trade. The interactions were very positive and if a trade did not happen then no one was upset. I brought in some new paint brushes to trade and saw a Star Wars mug I liked. After some discussion with Fatma the trade was agreed on.

Hamid and I traded Top Trumps from myself in return for a model Smurf from Hamid. The students agreed it was a very enjoyable lesson which was fun, but at the same time taught them how to use persuasive language to secure a trade.

One student did not return her permission form and so could not trade. This was solved by writing an IOU to her friend saying that the trade can go ahead next week once the required documents are in place. This shows how the students have developed the skill of independence and thinking creatively. This was a very positive learning experience that we would like to repeat very soon. Well done class!
