After designing their treasure boxes, Grade 8 students crafted them using clay hand building techniques, like rolling out slabs and using scoring and slip to join two pieces together. After their greenware had dried, some students opted to apply underglaze in a variety of colors. While greenware is very fragile and several pieces broke during this step, it was important to give them the opportunity to learn about what materials we have and how they can be used.
Meanwhile, our AMACO kiln successfully underwent two firing tests. Yesterday, the student work underwent its first bisque firing and the kiln has now cooled enough to take a peek! Expect to see the finished works on display in LC3 in about a week; we want to briefly share them with the school before students take them home to keep.
