We began the year with an introduction to the Surrealist art movement and how it was influenced by World War I, French polite society, and psychology. So far, we have discovered that the Surrealist artists and writers used specific techniques to generate their strange-seeming ideas. They weren’t actually crazy! Instead, they wrote down their dreams, or rolled dice to decide what to draw, or played a word game similar to MadLibs to create silly sentences that would then inspire their work.
Now that students have a general idea of what Surrealism is, they are going to each research one Surrealist artist and share back to the group! This research task will give everyone a chance to practice their information and media literacy ATL skills.
