The students in 5KL have had a change to their routine recently. Instead of having activities to complete about a number or fraction of the day, they are being given number puzzles. Countdown puzzles come from a British TV show of the same name. The students are given 6 numbers (any of 1-10, 25, 50, 75 or 100) and a randomly generated target number. Using any processes and some or all of the numbers given, the students need to make the target number. There are often several ways to get the answer and students can be relied upon to find most of them. One puzzle this week gave the numbers: 1,9,3,3,100 and 25 with a target of 413. One of the ways a student found was: 100-3=97 3+1=4 97×4=388 388+25=413. Wonderful mental gymnastics all around.
