In their current unit Less = More, our Grade 8 students have been studying minimalist music. Minimalist music is built on constantly repeating musical patterns (ostinato). In addition to learning compositional skills in preparation for the moment when they will compose their own minimalist music, students have also been interacting with many different minimalist pieces.

One such piece was Short Ride in a Fast Machine by the American composer John Adams (… a relative of our secondary team leader?!). The inspiration for this piece was a quick spin in a Lamborghini… an experience which left John Adams feeling a little dizzy and nauseous! Do you think those feelings come through in the piece?

The Grade 8 students very successfully analyzed this piece of music by creating a timeline ordering various musical moments. An understanding of some advanced musical terminology was required in addition to an attentive ear and team work. Good work, Grade 8s.
