Grade 11 Theory of Knowledge students have begun inviting guests to visit our class so they can talk TOK. This week Christine, invited Ms. Kenney to share how the classic 1939 movie “Gone with the Wind” influenced her views of the American South and slavery when she was growing up. The conversation quickly turned to how one’s cultural conditioning influences how we perceive historical events. Ms. Kenney shared how she was swayed by the movie which was sympathetic to the Southerners way of life, which included slavery. This influenced the young 11 year old Ms. Kenney who grew up in a southern state. She later began to question her views about the the old American South through her broadening of experience and education. This clearly highlighted how important it is to keep the Learner Profile attributes, “Open-minded” and “Critical Thinker” active when we are exposed to media and art. G11 students used the Visible Thinking Routine as they began to notice and think about all the Connections, Extensions, and Challenges they were able to make between Ms. Kenney’s visit and TOK. It was quite a surprise for them to find so many nuggets of knowledge from this experience. Thanks to Ms. Kenney for taking the time to visit TOK this week!
