This week was all about discovery for the G7 math students. Using Geoboards, together we developed a list of as many different types of triangles as we could find on a 9×9 Geoboard (see photos below). There were many ways of learning from these triangles, like studying their characteristics, finding their area and perimeter using algebra, and learning new vocabulary, like the word “congruent” meaning same size and shape.
Making assumptions about the size of each side, students then focussed on proving which triangle was the smallest, the next smallest and all the way up to the largest. This was a great introduction to algebra and the practice of “combining like terms”, a foundational inquiry into algebra. The G7s did great!
