We continued our inquiry into maps and how we can use them to locate places. We watched a BrainPOPJr video to learn more about maps and recorded our learning in our inquiry journals. We then read 2 short paragraphs about latitude and longitude and made notes to answer our questions about latitude and longitude lines. We played games and practiced using latitude and longitude coordinates to find places on a map and by putting coordinates into Google Maps. Next week we will learn more about different kinds of maps and how cartography has changed over the years.
In Math students were given an oral quiz to assess their learning about time. We discovered that most of us could use more practice calculating elapsed time. A few of us still need to practice reading analog clocks as well. Please practice this skill with your child at home. We have moved onto learning about spatial directions and positions in Math, however once a week we will be working on reviewing all Grade 2 Math skills, including time. Today students played “Mathological Liar” to review math skills and work on their problem solving skills. It took students awhile to learn how to understand the word problems but now they have the hang of it and really enjoy finding out who is the “liar” by solving the problems and finding out who’s answer doesn’t match up.
In writing we have been looking at character traits and starting to plan a narrative story with developed characters, setting and a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Have a good weekend.
