We started off our Oman Week by exploring Omani Culture. The Omani staff and parents at ABIS always prepare such wonderful presentations and food for us to enjoy. Getting henna from Ms. Fatma is always a favourite for the girls, and we all loved painting the magmars this year.
This year we have 2. Grade 11 students that are helping us out. Claire and Hoor have prepared some art activities and games about Oman. We made the Omani flag out of tissue and crepe paper on Sunday and made Omani animals from clay on Monday. They have been a huge help and we love doing art with them!
We are so lucky to be able to start our new unit of inquiry about ecosystems by exploring ecosystems around Oman! Our first trip was to Wadi Hibi where we did an ecosystems scavenger hunt. Teams of 4 used their observation skills to find various living and non-living things in a wadi ecosystem. We used our iPads to snap photos of our items and we will use these photos next week as we tune into our unit of inquiry further. We also caught a frog and 3 tadpoles!
On Tuesday we challenged ourselves by taking on a steep mountain hike near the town of Willi. At the top we explored some very old tombs and then continued hiking across the top to explore several more tombs. I was very proud of all the students (and parents) for completing the entire 2 hour hike! It was nice to have cooler weather this year.
After the hike we headed to Uqm beach to cool off and relax. We had another ecosystem scavenger hunt about a beach ecosystem but after hiking and playing in the water we decided maybe we had done enough work for the day and that we would come back another day to properly explore the beach ecosystem.
We are off to Al Hazm fort on Wednesday followed by our sleepover at school!
