Hello parents

It has been a few weeks since I posted about Dance, so here is an overall update of what we have been doing in recent weeks!

Primary School students from K3-Grade 5 have spent some time investigating different ways of creating and composing. Each age group has considered different choreographic principles, which are the elements that go into creating movement. Working at different levels, tempos and directions have been investigated, as well as whether movement travels (locomotor) or is on the spot (axial). The use of dance terminology has been encouraged at an age and stage appropriate level – for example, the word locomotor has been introduced later than axial – younger students have used the word “travelling”. The younger students have also investigated different forms of movement, such as using a gliding step, or a flicking step or a turning step in their creations. For Grade Five their unit on Force and Motion has some relevance to this genre – hip hop can be said to use force to propel motion.

I have been sharing all links of rehearsals with teachers from grades K3-2 (and at times grade 3) so they can put them on your children’s websites and, if they wish, include them in their weekly Broadcaster post. Please go to your child’s website to see samples of all of their work. Some links are included with this post but it is only a small example of the students’ choreographic processes throughout the primary school. Grades three and up have been provided with links and, when time permits, some opportunity to reflect on their processes. It has been their responsibility to upload the links.

In the last couple of weeks, the students have been learning moves for their latest genre – hip hop. There has been much excitement about this as last year hip hop was not covered. Our primary students have been looking at the use of force in hip hop, the use of sharp, short moves, rolls, direction changes and, particularly for the older ones, the use of odd counts and contrasting movements.

There are assembly performances scheduled for this genre and they are as follows:

K3-grade 2 will perform on FEBRUARY 25.

Grades 3-5 (and possibly 6) will perform on MARCH 10.

PLEASE make a copy of these dates and put them somewhere obvious in your house (fridge?) so that you do not have to go back and re-find this post.
Your children will be required to wear hip hop clothes. There is a wide variety of clothing for this, so it is likely you will already have something appropriate for your child to wear!!!
You could consider:

Colourful tee shirts or singlets with tee shirts underneath or sweaters with hoods

Jeans or cargo pants or tracksuit pants (baggy is good but ensure they stay on)

Sneakers/tackies/trainers/sports shoes

Chain necklaces, bands for the wrist, bandanas, caps put the wrong way on
This should be all you need.  If you don’t have any of these items, we still have six weeks, with one being Explore Oman Week and one being the holiday week, so you have plenty of time to have a bit of fun finding “cool” items for your children to wear.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy Explore Oman Week!
