Grade 1 students are studying beat, rhythm and rhythmic notation this year in music. They are busy notating (writing down what they hear) and dictating (making up a pattern and speaking it to the rest of the class) 4 beat rhythm patterns using art sticks!
Blue Jello is a system developed by a Suzuki piano teacher, Michiko Yurko, to help her students quickly identify and decode rhythmic patterns. Blue is a quarter note (or crotchet), Jello is for two eighth notes (or quavers). Ask your child to write out this pattern: Blue jello jello blue, and see what happens!
