Thank you to all the parents for sending their forms back in. This will be a student led conference, where your child gets to show off some of their favourite things we have done throughout the year. This can be very scary and some kids, even those that don’t normally get nervous, can freeze up especially when asked too many questions. Please be gentle with your questions. If your child forgets why they chose something or can’t remember what we did, remember that some of this stuff happened at the beginning of the year and for them, that is a long time ago. Do not be critical of your child’s work, as the stuff they have chosen, they chose because they are very proud of it. Ask them why they love it or why they chose it. If they had fun making it or doing the project and what part they liked the best. Let your child have their moment to shine without judgement, as they have all worked very hard and deserve it.
How it will run:
- There will be 3 families in the classroom at one time. There will be stations. Your child will be told what station to start at, so follow them. Here are the stations:
- Reading – they will read you a book they have preselected.
- Portfolio – a selection of their favourite things from the year. ==> You cannot take these home, as we fill them out for the whole year and then pass them to grade 2 to add to for next year. When you leave the school, you then take this with you and it is a nice collection of some of their favourite things.
- Science – We did many experiments with rocks, some of which need to be left overnight. So the kids chose a couple of the easier ones they can quickly show you
- Math Game – The kids have selected 3 math games of the many we have done so far. They will choose ONE of the games to teach you. Do not allow them to explain all of them, as we do only have half an hour.
- Technology – The kids did a story on the iPad as a final assessment for their Rocks, Rock! unit. I will have instructions on how to find the story, just in case they forget.
- Writing is included in their portfolio’s.
It is very important that you are on time for your appointment and do not run over time, especially on Tuesday, as there are groups booked after you. If you do not finish within the half hour time, you will need to stop and allow the next group to get started, even if your child is adamant that they need to finish (I know this can be tough). If you are ready to move to the next station, but another group is there, jump to one you have not done yet. Each station is ment to be quick and give you plenty of time to finish, so do not worry if you finish a bit early.Since this is a student led conference, I will be in the classroom completing some work. If there are any pressing issues you feel you need to discuss with me, we can schedule a time on a different day where we can have that conversation. Thank you all for your time and I look forward to seeing you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Neid
