December 19th 1944 is the birthdate of one of the most famous mathematicians of the modern era, Mitchell Feigenbaum. Chaos theory is one of the most important developments in mathematics of the last 50 years and develops the model of how the world and the universe works. Feigenbaum worked at the famous Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico. Using a simple calculator in the 1970s he examined ratios between intervals of what were thought to be chaotic systems and found a constant value of 4.6692….., an irrational number now known as the first Feigenbaum constant. This value could eventually prove to be as important as the value of ‘pi’ and ‘e’ that we already use in mathematics today…..
