The assembly was a great success!!! I hope all those that attended enjoyed the show and to those who did not come, hopefully next time you will be there. Our students did a great job and we all should be proud of them.
Our current Unit of Inquiry is “How We Organize Ourselves’. When we return from the break students will be put into their community groups. The students will create a 2D community on a large piece of paper. They will create a space that makes people happy and healthy. These places could be parks, hospitals, libraries, food courts and sport stadiums. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. They will end the unit with a group’s presentations that will be videoed for you to see.
This week in English the students have begun reading the Turtle and the Hare. They have completed a graphic organizer on the beginning, middle, and end of the story. I am focusing on students understanding main ideas and summarizing. It is important that the students are able to tell you what they have read. This is something that you can do with your children at home. For phonics this week we continued to review vowel teams, glued sounds, and r-controlled vowels. They were introduced to the concept of root word and suffixes. Suffixes are added to the end of a root word. The suffix changes the meaning of the root word. Examples of suffixes the students have learned are -ed, -ing, -s and -es. The suffixes -ed and -ing change the verb to the past or the present tense. Plural suffixes change the root word from one to more than one.
For maths this week the students completed their unit on 2D shapes. When we return from break they will begin working on 3D shapes. The 3D shapes the students will learn about are the sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cone, pyramid, triangular prism and cylinder. Students will learn about how many faces, vertices and edges the shape has. Students will continue reviewing patterns, number bonds, and place value.
