Dear Secondary Families,
One of our important responsibilities in Secondary School is to help students look beyond their immediate studies and begin to understand the opportunities and pathways available to them after school. Careers and university guidance is not simply about making decisions in Grade 12; it is about giving students experiences throughout Secondary School that help them discover their interests, recognise their strengths and make increasingly informed choices about their futures.
Next Monday, our Grade 10, 11 and 12 students will travel to Muscat to attend the EduTraC Oman; Higher Education Training and Career Expo, where they will have the opportunity to meet representatives from universities and industries from around the world. Events such as this give students the chance to explore different courses, institutions and career pathways, ask questions and begin thinking more deeply about where their education might take them.
We are also very excited to be organising our first ABIS Careers Fair. Thank you to the parents who have already responded to our invitation to become involved. We still need more volunteers to make the event a success and hope that you can respond to survey sent by email and WhatsApp. Having professionals from a wide range of careers willing to share their experiences with our students is incredibly valuable. Hearing directly from people working in different fields can help students understand not only the qualifications required, but also what different careers actually involve and the many different routes that people take to get there. We greatly appreciate the support of our community in helping us provide this opportunity.
These experiences form an important part of helping our students develop aspirations while also making informed and realistic choices. As students progress through Secondary School, we want them to increasingly understand the connection between the subjects they study, the skills they develop and the opportunities available to them beyond ABIS.
Next week we will also hold our Parent Coffee Morning, and all Primary and Secondary parents are warmly invited to join us. This will be an opportunity to meet with Mr Matthew and me, as the Primary and Secondary Principals, and to talk informally about school life. There will also be a PYP workshop for parents. Our following Coffee Morning will coincide with the Secondary Careers Fair, providing another opportunity for parents to be involved in this important aspect of our students’ education.
Have a lovely weekend,
Andy Cooper
Secondary Principal
